The goal of my art is to embody the colours of my soul and hopefully hit the viewer like a tattoo in their retina. My art is an attempt for self-discovery. The expressive, symbolic representations are meant to evoke feelings of love, pain, fear, ecstasy.
My art practice is transdisciplinary, fusing visual art, poetry and natural science by creating paintings that endeavour to push the boundaries. My literature background informs my works in myriad ways. References to the poetry of Sylvia Plath have been a lush source of inspiration for a sizable body of work but also the ouevre of Anne Sexton and B.R. Platnar. Language is a prominent feature of my work: I often incorporate text into the piece, and create graffiti-style, witty inscriptions.
Pertaining to the choice of techniques, all my artworks have always been mixed-media, which provides me with the desired freedom of formal expression. In addition to acrylic, pastel and charcoal, I make collage of wood shavings, hemp fibre, shredded paper as well as found objects. I also apply embroidery. Fungi and lichens (lichenised fungi) are my dominant media, obtained from dry collections or harvested during personal forays, in collaboration with both Macedonian and foreign scientists, who also assist in species identification. I 'draw' with lichens and create mosaics with fungi. I also create handmade fungal paper and pulp artworks. I occasionally paint on mycofoam panel, which is biomaterial produced of fungal mycelium and agricultural residues. The species scientific name and geographic provenance are always included as part of the art piece. Sustainability comes first, and I hope that the prudent use of fungi specimens in an art context can also raise awareness for conservation of these fascinating but often neglected organisms.
